My ol' pal Pat Barrat, who used to mechanic for George Brown says that it was the end of George when Alf turned up, new generation and all that.
Tells the tale of when they first saw Hagon at a meeting and the clutch wouldn't take the grunt of the blown JAP motor, so Alf bolted the clutch up solid, ran it up on a rear axle stand and got his blokes to push it off the stand when the light changed. Respect.

Yes ive seen a photo of them doing that somewhere or other. He would certainly have known what the rear cylinder was doing !

Those were the days when men dressed appropriately for drag racing in collar and tie. How standards have slipped.
