NORTHERN MONKEYS

Sam "Fast" Matthewman and Stu "Big" Mills (although they are both big and fast) have been the pair to beat at local Hillclimbs for a few years now and for 2011 stepped up to do the full UK NHCA championship starting and ending at Hartland Quay in Devon.
Competing mostly on hills they hadn't ridden before they had a good year...

1st in the North Devon Sand Sculpture event in March

Stu finished 3rd in class and 8th overall.

while Sam was 2nd in class and 4th in the Outright Championshop

SCRAMBLING

As a young lad my dad used to take me to local Hillclimbs at Castle Howard but probably the first motorsport event i ever went to on my own was a 2 mile push bike ride to Crook Farm at Wrelton. For years i had been able to hear the racing from our back garden so it must have been a big day to finally get there. It was a narrow rough track on a hillside, this is the only photo i can find from that era, taken in the late '60s.

LAYCOCK GRENFELL

Rob bought the Grenfell special in 1962 before he even had a driving licence. Driven and developed over almost half a century it has now passed down to George who has been using it for flathead V8 championship hillclimbs.

EXPLORING THE LIMITS

Big Stu takes a dump at Harewood hillclimb last weekend, by skilfully tucking his wild fat arse under the bike he managed to save it from any major damage and ended up with 4th overall in the top ten run off. Fellow TL000 (now unsupercharged) local Sam Matthewman was 2nd.
Both have been successfully competing in the British hillclimb championship this year, hopefully a report on here soon.

SCARBOROUGH SPEED WEEK

This is the day when a nice family who bought a nice house on Mountside, a nice quiet part of Scarborough, realise they may have dropped a huge bollock.

Hillclimb today, classic and modern, followed by a Sprint tomorrow and the Cock of The North Continental 2 day road races at the weekend. Not sure why it is Continental, i think you get a croissant inside your programme.
Photo is Mac Hobson in the early 60s at the top of Quarry Hill, it has been resurfaced since then !

If you havent been try a lap with Keith Pringle.

CASTLE HOWARD HILL CLIMB

Went for a bike ride (pedal !) this morning and ended up on some of the little roads that my dad used to go on when he would take me to Castle Howard Hill Climb in the '60s. The track was very narrow with a hairpin that was almost impossible to get round in a single seater, certainly no chance of a track licence nowadays. It used to finish in front of the stately home, very picturesque although as a young boy i wasn't interested in such things. I only had eyes for Minis and a nose for Castrol R ! Top photo is at Olivers Mount in '68, bottom is Castle Howard in '67.

MOTOR RACING EARLY '70s

In the early to mid '70s i helped out working in my spare time for local racing driver Peter Clark. Pete had won the Northern Saloon Car championship and was racing a Crossle Formula Ford, again in the Northern series. We would work on the car a couple of nights a week then go racing every fortnight or so through the season. We raced at Croft, Cadwell, Ingliston, Oulton Park and in the first year at Rufforth where the car and driver were almost totalled in a big accident.
In the early years he won the championship twice before making the step into Formula 3, although he was on top of his game with the FF car in F3 we were little fishes in a very big sea and really got nowhere before running out of funds and Pete decided his future lay in (Le Mans style) sports cars. This took us to the 1000ks at Brands and big meetings at Silverstone but again there wasnt much of the earlier success.
The Wisharts name on the car belonged to a Co.Durham garage and sponsor of Peters run by Stan Robinson who basically blew the business by pouring all the money into motor racing and a grand lifestyle (to us anyway). The garage went tits up and much of the racing stuff sold for peanuts at the liquidation sale.
Through the Wisharts connection Paddy and i got to service on the Avon Tour of Britain in 1974, this legendary event centred in Birmingham and included races and rally stages all over the country. All the major manufacturers had teams in it and we rubbed shoulders with Mike Batt and the Wombles and got hammered with Roger Clark every night. A mint event though i ended up in Birmingham hospital after hacksawing through my finger.

The hairy boys in the top photo are Dick Palmer now parts manager at a local Volvo dealership with me on the front wheel and Pete in the car. In the lower left photo L to R Kirsty, whereabouts unknown. Christine, later my wife who sadly died in 1991. Paddy, now has his own car service and repair business after a lifetime of being late for work and Betty, Petes wife, i heard she went back to live in her native Birmingham.

Pete Clark packed in racing in the late 70s and set up the highly successful CC Racing with Dave Cook, they built and raced the works Ford Capris in the British and Euro Touring Car championships and went on the be one of the Norths top Porsche specialists. Pete's passion by then was flying and he was a very successful aerobatics pilot before being killed performing at a show in the late 90s.

BABY LOVE

Today i bought a copy of Performance Blokes to read about Sams' Blown TL1000. Brilliant feature written by Gary Inman (Sideblog/Sideburn), you are right Gary "Britains' got Talent" is looking the wrong way. See more of Sams bike on here, press the Motor Sport tag.

Why are jelly babies covered in dust nowadays ?

SANTA POD EURO FINALS

This weekend, weather forecast good (but dont blame me if its wrong). If you havent been you should, you will never have seen or heard anything quite like it.
Found this well put together vid on Youtube which gives a taster of the experience (you can FF the first minute unless you enjoy car travel).

HILLCLIMBERS

Lovely sunny ride out to Scarborough yesterday for the final Olivers Mount hillclimb of this year. Supercharged Sam won by 4/10s from Supersmooth Stu. Watch out for a feature on Sams' fabulous blown TL in Performance Bikes soon, but remember it was on here first (see 7th July post) !

AUTOGRASS MOG

While we were on holiday in Wales earlier this month i went to the first day of the Autograss Nationals which were held this year near Hereford. I havent been to a big Autograss meeting for a few years and the standards of car preparation and presentation get better all the time. Unfortunately the cost gets higher and the back street ingenuity less, still it was refreshing to see this Moggy in class 3 (unlimited front engined rear wheel drive saloons), basically spaceframe front end housing a big cc Vauxhall 16v with 5 linked Atlas at the back. Dont think he made the final but was the highlight of my day.
