MALLE MILE 2021

Hard to know what to say about the Mile, not a bike rally, not a race meeting, but undoubtably the friendliest bike event i've ever been to. Lovely people all trying to organise a huge number of racers ( i believe nearly 600) take part in events running up to 3 hours behind schedule but somehow it all seems to work. Please though, get a bigger bar for next year....and more food stalls.  I will be coming back !
As i was competing (queuing) i didn't get much chance to take photos but there were almost as many photographers as bikes so i'm sure you will find loads on Instagram/FB etc over the coming week.
Of the pics i did take this lady pretty much sums it up, she is one of many happy girls all helping out non stop and always with a big smile. When you're hot and have queued for ages and your bike won't start because you haven't plugged your lanyard in a smiley face in white overalls shows up asking if you are enjoying yourself, and suddenly you are.
I had intended on racing the sprint, hill climb and Malle 100 but after some over revving on the hill and subsequent misfiring i retired for the day to spectate (and queue for a beer).

*If you are American i believe you spell it queuing but we are British and we invented it so its queueing.

FARMER JOHN

John is a local guy who's been buying Slabside GSXR parts off me for a few months for a bike he is restoring. He invited me to go and see the bikes he's built over the years so I went for a look yesterday. Each one has its own story and all apart from the trials AJS were built/restored by him. At least two were bought in the village pub, the green A7 in boxes for £100 ! maybe I should get out more. He has owned the '63 Bonneville for over 40 years.
He went to the TT on the Lightning Clubman three years ago but with increasing years (he's even older than me) finds it hard to start them now so his riding is limited to an Aprillia Mille R and a Fireblade....

WEST COAST TRIUMPH

That's west coast Australia. Wayne originally from Scotland sent an update on his pre-unit 650. the frame broke in half so he made a few alterations at the same time.... Morgo barrels, GP carbs (carbies apparently), rebuilt girder, new wheels etc. then he had a beer in the sun.

TWO STEPS FORWARD ONE STEP BACK

Bathtub Thunderbird is now finished and on the road or was.... headbolts were too long and hadn't quite nipped the gasket, who knew ? er, who checked ?...

...meanwhile the Martek GSXR is plodding along, lots of things nearly but not quite done. Had a tightness of budget and sprayed it satin black, not too happy with the result but may leave it that way now until it's finished. I have a want to write down each side in huge letters but I may get over that too, remember the Extreme Engineering Harris Magnum of about 15 years ago ? Had an interesting talk with Toddy (formerly of Martek) to find some more history on the bike and have been trying to get in touch with Keith Flint but so far with no success. It would be good to have some firm engine specs, the word is that he (KF) had a fair bit of engine work done after taking delivery but exact details are unknown.

THIS BIKE

I don't like the name Old Blu', why it is abbreviated ? if you leave a letter off but put a top tadpole its not really any shorter, still, it wasn't my doing and I think we're stuck with it..
Its had a busy year, the front wheel bearings are shagged, the fork seals don't leak any more so guess is they are empty and the left pot smokes like a Peaky Blinder but its still my best thing. Plans were made for a full stripdown and rebuild with girder front end, different wheels, motor etc but i just shouldn't.

I will have a look inside and mend its disease, tickle up the front end and alter the inlet manifold so the carb doesn't eat your trousers then its back for 2014, I would like, just a little, front brake though.

So I have a girder and wheels off a '38 T80 along with a doing pre-unit with big jugs 4 plugs and chrome Monoblocs, gearbox, tank, seat and other stuff but i need a frame, got anything for me ? 650 Pre Unit rigid or S/arm, modified or not.... tri650@live.co.uk

CHOPPER FOR THE CHOP

Shame to pull it to bits ? not at all, i have sold almost every bike iv'e ever built as parts and on the rare occasion they have gone complete i have always been disappointed with the way they have been looked after and maintained. So here we go... don't really intend to keep any of it so if there are any parts you need mail me on tri650@live.co.uk Look back at the photos and spec from a couple of weeks ago to see what's what.

PROGRESS REPORT

Managed a couple of miles on the Thunderbird yesterday, first time its turned a wheel under its own steam for over 20 years. After a life of hardtails and cafe racers its like riding on a cloud. There are a few little jobs to do before a proper test ride but nothing major. Standard is the new custom, for now anyway...

The wiring is now sorted on the GSXR as is the oil cooler (since these pics), not that much left to do before it lives. You will probably hear it when it happens, wherever you are.

ENGINEERING TRIUMPH

Right side engine runs conventionally, left presumably runs backwards with a reverse head. Drive is direct. Try explaining this to some drunk twat in a Jesters hat at a bike rally.
It was suposedly built by a guy who used to work for Sonny Routt so there was a chance it worked.

NO SALE

The chop failed miserably on eBay, perhaps i should've bid it up a bit like everyone else does. Not too sure of its future now, might just stick it in a corner under a sheet unless someone wants the rolling chassis. I have had a couple of kicks in the balls, sorry offers, today but it's £6,000, there is no negotiation.
This is journo legend and all round good egg Odgie who photographed it at the Trip Out.

THUNDERBIRD RESTO

It's supposedly a straightforward restoration so everything will work just like it should. My last post in April said ready next month, well here we are in October, the kickstart hits the silencer, the mag has given up, the headlight doesnt work anymore..... and i keep moving the goalposts by "just doing this and that" you know, modifying and altering stuff i should leave alone just for the sake of it. Ready next year for sure !

MATTMOBILE

Matt is selling his Triumph chop project together with some rare parts including 21" and 16" Borrani rims he bought from me a while back. Its on ebay now here

PHIL'S T140

Phil from Doncaster sent me these pics of his recently finished T140 shortly to appear in 100% Biker  (Good magazine, terrible name). Built almost entirely by himself, friend Mark and his dad including paint, seat trimming and polishing. That is one shiny engine. They have another in the pipeline with a reverse head, how wierd........

If you have anything relevant (and that is pretty much anything) you want to show off or sell, send it to me tri650@live.co.uk

TRIUMPH CHOPPER FOR SALE

Triumph 750 Chopper, originally built in the '70s in the USA, imported to UK in mid '90s and fully re-built and restored by me 2 years ago using all new or reconditioned parts.
Frame: 1960s Bonneville goosenecked and fitted with a J&D hardtail. Checked on Jig, powdercoated and gloss painted and lacquered in black. Rear guard is a '50s Triumph front shortened to suit.
Wheels: 18" rear and 21" front, both rebuilt with powder coated rims and stainless steel spokes. Rear tyre is Avon SM2 4.00 x 18" and front is super rare 2.75 x 21 Speedmaster (new old stock). Front hub and brake are Hurst Airheart. Both wheels were fitted with new bearings and seals, rear converted to Suzuki spindle.
Footrests, gearlever, kickstart and rear brake linkage all bought new from Factory Metalworks in US together with brass level and sight bungs.
Fuel tank is 2.2g Paugho ribbed, painted by Dave Dickinson of Bridlington fitted with Krommet cap. Oil tank is chrome '70s Starburst with brass cap from Rock Solid Mcs Portugal.
Engine: 1966 T120R fully rebuilt, new 750 Morgo conversion, all new bearings and seals, fitted with a TR6 single carb cylinder head reconditioned by The Cylinder Head Shop, London. Oil pump is also from Morgo and a remote filter is fitted. BBB primary belt drive and Joe Hunt magneto (also new). Magneto has an engraved cast alloy cover instead of the original plastic. Primary cover is '70s MPD chrome plated. Carb is Amal Concentric on tapered inlet to compensate for angle of engine with short bellmouth and finned top. Exhausts are crossover drags again bought new from USA with Wassell large finned clamps. Gearbox is standard 4 speed but has tallest option sprocket and brake drum/sprocket, cruise at 70mph all day vibration free. All fasteners on engine and chassis are chromed or stainless steel.
Forks are 16" over Fury re-chromed and re-bushed with gold plated springs. Rockers have been recently modified and ideally need re-chroming. Sissy bar is an original 70s item extended and re-chromed. Seat is also a 70s original Drag Specialities item re trimmed in the original style. Bars are currently Zs but buyer has options of pullbacks if preferred. Horn is Italian Campanelclax.
The bike has completed under 2,000 miles since built including being ridden from North Yorkshire to Cornwall two months ago. Easy to start and ride.
It is registered as a 1959 Triumph 750 on a 6 digit number so free tax and MOT exempt. There is no charging system and no lights are fitted but should not be a problem to fit if you felt the need.
For sale only to fund new projects.
Happy to help with transportation or export.
