A couple of visitors at the workshop this week with beautiful newly restored rides, John with his Lambretta and Mike Browns' Jag. One of each please..

ROBS' RAILTON

Sometimes i look at my old bikes and shelves of parts and it gives me a warm feeling, then i go to Roberts workshop and in comparison all my stuff is mass produced crap! Rob and son George restore, rebuild and maintain vintage and veteran cars in Malton and Robs' current project is a late 1930s Railton special. Despite his work including meticulous restorations he likes nothing better than to piss off the puritans by making everything himself to his own design rather than how it "should" be. The car is basically a '39 Hudson flathead straight 8 and will have a home built ash frame and alloy bodywork. Rob had just finished the throttle linkage and choke mechanism when i called in last week, a real work of art. I will take more photos and post them as the car progresses. See the little bike in the foreground? he built that too, watch this space..

According to their business card Walter and Will do "motorcycle sales, spares, repairs, one off stainless steel exhausts, stainless and aluminium welding, british bike restoration and MOT testing" however they also do friendship, enthusiasm and inspiration and have a proper step back in time workshop. When i want a silk purse making out of my sows ear this is where i go.









She already likes Nortons and cries when she sees a Gold Wing.

Gem and Nick will print your T shirts, Sweat shirts, knickers possibly even your body. Nick also builds things, lots of things, then gets fed up after a month and sells them, then builds something else. Familiar ? He has just built the green monster from an old Disco so if you fancy it give him a ring in about 3 weeks....

PERSONAL ESCORTS

I spent from early 80s to around 1994 breaking, building and rallying Ford Escorts. I used other cars as well, Manta, Sunbeam, Lada, Renault 5, Vauxhall Magnum, Minis etc but mostly Escorts a few of which you can see here. Some of the photos have been pinned up in my workshop for over 25 years so are in a poor state. I could never afford to have a proper go but would build up a car and do maybe two or three events then strip it or sell it on. I had the blue MK1 (25) three times and still have the log book but the car was finally written off (not by me) against a plough parked next to a stage.
There were lots of events to chose from, you could probably do 12 rallies a year without travelling more than 30 miles from our town. Over the last 20 years most disused airfields have been dug up or built on, farm tracks are no longer available and the few forests we are still allowed to hire are very expensive. There are about 4 rallies a year now in our area.
Through my business Yorkshire Rally Spares, the name i still trade under, i stripped well over 100 Escorts and even sent perfectly good bodyshells for scrap because i had no room for them; also had a few quite famous cars with competition history which now are worth a fortune but then were just old rally cars.
By the end of the 90s cars were getting difficult to find and the resulting bidding wars to get them were making life difficult so i gradually moved my business to selling bike parts.
The final photo was after a very snowy rally using Cropton forest and was a result of being told we were doing very well !

Z1000 BREAKING

Just in to break this week. Z1000, 1170 Wiseco, flowed head, welded crank, vernier cam wheels, Vance Hines pipe, Metmachex arm, Raask rearsets, everything only 400 miles since new or rebuilt.

BSA FIGHTS BACK

Guy who has the unit opposite us has bought this tasty RGS replica A10.


But he washed it and now it wont start.

Then the kickstart rubber came off when he was trying to get it going.

It may be on ebay next week !
